At the time of writing, excitement and anticipation was building for football’s World Cup 2002. The talk was of broken metatarsals and of who should be in the final squad. Could England repeat their triumph of 1966? Could an African nation win the cup for the first time? Whilst France and Argentina were considered to be the favourites to win the tournament, no-one could be 100% certain of ultimate victory.
When Jesus Christ died on a cross and rose back to life nearly 2000 years ago, He secured victory for all those that would believe on Him and follow after Him. What to so many looked like a humiliating defeat, was in fact a triumph over the sin of mankind and over death, as He paid the penalty for our wrongdoing.
God invites everyone to be part of this victory by trusting on Jesus Christ to be their Saviour. We are told in the Bible, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes on Him, shall not perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
Are you on the victory side?
If you are then you can triumphantly echo the words of the Bible that say, “Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?” (1 Corinthians 15:55)
Whilst nobody can be certain of the outcome of various sporting events; the Christian is assured of victory and nothing, or no-one, can take it from them.
“But thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:57)
