What is an Evangelical Church?

With so many different 'churches' in the U.K. it is understandable that many people find the whole matter of 'church' rather confusing.  Church of England, Methodist, United Reformed, Open Brethren, Baptist, 'Evangelical' (and many more) all come under the broad heading of 'Protestant' churches.  Such churches have in common the Bible as their basis of faith.  It is, therefore, in their 'traditions' and 'practices' (based on their views of the Bible) that they differ.  But were there always so many brands of church?

In the days following the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus the 'church' was born.  Acts chapter 2 gives the graphic account of how 3000 people responded to the message preached by the apostle Peter and 'were added' to the church.  Those early Christians owned no premises, they simply made it their habit to meet together regularly for communion, prayer, teaching and encouragement.  Hence, the 'church' was, and still is, basically all about PEOPLE who are followers of Jesus.  Only those who have trusted Him as Lord and Saviour are part of it.

So why the label 'Manor Road Evangelical Church'?  I suppose it's a bit like a label on a tin, which tells you what you'll find inside.  The root of the word 'evangelical' is: 'Good News'.  So we, as a small local church, are committed to sharing the 'Good News' about Jesus Christ with others.  In fact, a key reason for producing this magazine is to communicate to you, the incredible news that,

'…God so loved the world, that He gave His One and

Only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not

perish but have eternal life.'

(John chapter 3 verse 16, The Bible)
